The challenge

In the research on borders capes, particularly in the Albanian-Greek borderland, explorations of identities and fluidity of socio-cultural boundaries play a key role. Based on several ethnographic interviews and participatory observation during short-term fieldwork in the Konitsa region of North-Western Greece, this study aims to explore the metalinguistic narratives of the local people coming from Albanian / Arvanitika - speaking families.

Approach

Living for 2 weeks in the Konitsa region we conducted ethnographic research with local families where we employed various research methods like In-depth Interviews, Literature Review, Participatory Observation, and Discourse Analysis.

  • Exploratory Research: Conducted interviews and participatory observation during fieldwork to uncover indigenous mental models, attitudes, and behaviours towards linguistic practices.
  • Secondary research: Analysed relevant bibliography and performed discourse analysis post-fieldwork to identify key themes and frameworks.
